FDA records show that seventeen patch users between the ages of 17 and 30 have suffered fatal heart attacks, blood clots and possible strokes since August 2002.
- The FDA has logged 9,116 reports of adverse reactions to the patch in a 17 month period.
- During a 12 month period, 44 serious injuries or deaths have been associated with Ortho Evra.
- The Associated Press, under a Freedom of Information Act request, appear to indicate that in 2004 -- when 800,000 women were on the patch -- the risk of dying or suffering a survivable blood clot while using the device was about three times higher than while using birth control pills.
About a dozen young women died last year from blood clots believed to be related to the birth-control patch Ortho Evra and dozens more survived strokes and other clot-related problems, safety reports reveal.
According to one of the many lawsuits that have been filed against Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiary, Ortho McNeil, the patch's manufacturer, in the year beginning May 1, 2002, reports the FDA received of serious clot-related injuries or deaths caused by Ortho-McNeil's Patch numbered 44, while only 17 similar reports were received during the same time period for their Pill, Ortho Tri-Cyclen, even though their Pill was used by almost six times as many women. After factoring in the significant difference in the number of women who use the two products, that's a ratio of over 15 times as many serious reports to the FDA for their Patch as compared to their Pill.
